How do I prevent buttons on my keyfob from being pocket pressed?

I have a 2006 Lincoln Zephyr which has remote keyless entry built into the key. It’s convenient, but every once in awhile I’ll come outside to a car with the front windows and sunroof open. This is a “feature” where if you press and hold down the unlock button on the key, it will automatically open the front windows and sunroof, regardless of whether the car is locked.

This is obviously a potential disaster if there’s rain.

Any suggestions on what I can do to remedy this situation? I’ve read that you can disable this feature on newer (2012+) Fusions/MKZs, but not older ones. Should I get an aftermarket keyless entry fob and then just take the battery out of this one?

That’s great. And I quote:

For units built on or before 09/1/2006 the feature cannot be disabled. This is the vehicle feature designed intent. If other abnormal conditions exist, follow normal WSM diagnostics in section 501-11. Return the vehicle to the owner and explain how the feature works.

I’m very much admitting that it’s a pocket dialing issue. Since the feature can’t be disabled, I need to figure something else out.

I glossed over that part.

My BMW has that, and I’ve accidentally opened all the windows in a massive overnight rain storm.

Other then that once, it’s never happened. I got used to holding my keys in my hand while walking away until I was out of range and when I’m home I don’t keep keys in my pocket anyway.

The plastic maintenance reminder card that Subaru provided for my keychain is just the right size to cover the buttons on the key fob. That’s what keeps me from accidentally pushing buttons I don’t want to. Perhaps a Lincoln key chain would do?
